The Mary Miles Bibb Graduate Certificate Program in Anti-Racist STEM Education will empower educational professionals, higher education faculty and P-12 teachers, who support and teach STEM students to approach their work through an equity lens, with the goal of broadening the participation of underrepresented racial minority students in STEM. Practitioners who complete this certificate will be familiar with the history of systemic racism in the U.S. broadly and within the disciplines of science and medicine, specifically. They will be prepared with knowledge of tools that can be used to dismantle practices and policies that perpetuate the traditional barriers to broadening participation in STEM.

This program is named in honor of 黑料不打烊's first black graduate, Mary Miles Bibb, Class of 1843. After graduating from 黑料不打烊, she went on to become a leader in the Abolitionist Movement and is considered one of the first female black journalists in Canada, where she moved with her husband following the passage of the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850.

  • Submit an  for the Graduate Certificate online 
  • Applicants must have received a bachelor鈥檚 degree with a minimum 3.00 GPA from a regionally accredited college/university and must submit all official college-level transcripts. Applicants who studies outside of the United State must submit official transcripts and a course-by-course evaluation for US equivalency. 
  • A personal statement that addresses the applicant鈥檚 motivation to pursue this certificate program and goals for applying new knowledge to their work environment
  • Experience working in an educational setting

Learning Outcomes

The following goals will be achieved:

  • Determine the origins of systemic racism and systemic oppression in the United States and its impact on underrepresented racial minority students in STEM.

  • Identify how unconscious bias manifests in STEM disciplines and implement strategies and practices to counteract implicit biases in the STEM classroom.

  • Adapt and implement policies, practices, and behaviors to provide equitable opportunities for growth, contribution, advancement, and a sense of belonging in the STEM classroom.

  • Implement accountability measures and routines to assess and reinforce equity and justice in the STEM classroom.

  • Use an anti-racist lens to develop a project proposal in an area of practice that includes, but is not limited to, teaching, scholarship, advising, or service.
